چکیده

This article is based on data gathered with three facilities: the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope (HST), the 6.5 m Magellan Telescopes at Las Campanas Observatory (LCO), and the 2.15-m J. Sahade telescope at Complejo Astronómico El Leoncito (CASLEO). The HST observations are associated with GO program 10602. HST is controlled from the Space Telescope Science Institute, which is operated by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, Inc., under NASA contract NAS 5-26555. CASLEO is operated under agreement between CONICET, SeCyT, and the Universities of La Plata, Córdoba and San Juan, Argentina. e-mail contact: [email protected]. Ramón y Cajal fellow. The nature of the young and low - mass open clusters Pismis 5 , vdB 80 , NGC 1931 and BDSB 96

We investigate the nature of 4 young and low-mass open clusters (OCs) located in the 2 and 3 quadrants with near-IR 2MASS photometry (errors < 0.1mag). After field decontamination, the colour-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) display similar morphologies: a poorly-populated main sequence (MS) and a dominant fraction of preMS (PMS) stars somewhat affected by differential reddening. Pismis 5, vdB80 and B...

Stellar Stability and the Chandrashekar Limit

One main application of the theory of general relativity is its application to the stability criteria of stellar structures and their consequences. We discuss a popular relativistic model of spherically symmetric stars, and, in the Newtonian limit, we derive the famous Chandrashekar limit, the upper bound for the mass of white dwarves. The Chandrashekar limit is derived to be 1.26 times the mas...

Evidence for a fundamental stellar upper mass limit from clustered star formation

The observed masses of the most massive stars do not surpass about 150M⊙. This may either be a fundamental upper mass limit which is defined by the physics of massive stars and/or their formation, or it may simply reflect the increasing sparsity of such very massive stars so that observing even higher-mass stars becomes unlikely in the Galaxy and the Magellanic Clouds. It is shown here that if ...

Can Stellar Yields Accurately Constrain the Upper Limit to the Initial Mass Function?

Recent determinations of the upper mass limit to the local initial mass function (IMF) claim a value of mU = 50±10 M⊙, based upon direct comparisons of the observed oxygen and iron abundances in metal-poor stars with the predicted stellar yields from Type II supernovae (SNe). An unappreciated uncertainty in these analyses is the input physics intrinsic to each SNe grid, and its effect upon stel...
